A proposed new prison is to be built in St. Catherine to house 5,000 male and female prisoners. The maximum- security facility will house both sexes under one roof but in separate sectors of the complex. The prisoners will also be separated by risk level and gender.
According to Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Technology over 260 million dollars has so far been collected from phone carriers who terminate incoming overseas calls in Jamaica since the inception of the levy on June 01, 2005. The phone cess, which is three US cents per minute for incoming calls terminated on land phones and two US cents on cell phones, is to be used to fund the Government’s E-learning initiative. The program is aimed at bringing primary school children into the information age.

Cabinet has given the go ahead to increase the compliment of the Jamaica Constabulary Force from 8500 to 10,000 over the next 18 months. 500 officers are to be moved from desk jobs to frontline duties. Some of these desk jobs are to be filled by civilians. The recruiting of new officers is to begin immediately. Operations Kingfish is also to be expanded.
The Jamaica Gasoline Retailers Association (JGRA) today initiated a two day protest against Esso’s pricing mechanism. Dealers of Esso Service Stations Island wide closed in an effort to get Esso to change it pricing strategy.
Since Friday rising waters in Wakefield Falmouth, Trelawny has forced over 30 families to evacuate their homes.
The West Indies demolished in the first test match in the three match test series between the West Indies and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. At the end of Australia’s second innings the ‘Windies’ needed 510 to win the match. They were all out for 129.

The Jamaica senior netball ‘Sunshine Girls’ suffered a 3-0 whitewash in the three Test practice series between Jamaica and Australia in Monday’s third match at the National Indoor Sports Centre. The Australians won 31-47.
Alleged gang leader of the ‘Gideon Warriors’ gang Joel Andem was today found guilty of illegal possession of firearm and shooting with intent in the Gun Court. Andem once the country’s most wanted man was captured last year May after eluding the security force for more than four years. After hearing the verdict today in court Andem stood and accused the judge of being biased. Andem’s lawer Janet Nosworthy appealed to the court not to send him to prison for a lengthy period. Sentencing will be done tomorrow.

After Wednesday’s morning meeting, members of the Jamaica Gasoline Retailers Association (JGRA) plan to continue their protest action against Esso by closing all service stations island wide for two days. Executive Director of the Fair Trading Commission, Barbara Lee, said that this action would be a breach of the Fair Competition Act by restricting supply to the public. Motorist rushed to fill their tanks at the news of the possible closure causing lengthy delays and mass confusion. Reports are that an emergency meeting was called late today.
Gas prices continue its downward trend. Today Petrojam announced that 87 and 90 gasoline would sell for $0.50 less, diesel $0.90 less and Kerosene $1.10 per litre.
It is feared that the outbreak of Leptospirosis has spread to Manchester. Fifteen persons have been admitted to hospital in that parish with symptoms of the disease. Farmers are now being advised to wear protective gear and keep away from stagnant water.
Illegal firearms and ammunition worth over 3 million Jamaican dollars was Tuesday night found at the Kingston Wharves. The police have said that the find is linked to the ‘Clansman’ gang based in Spnaish Town whose leader Donovan ‘Bulbie’ Bennett was killed recently by the security force. Reports are that documents found at Bennett’s resident led the police to the shipment. 20 firearms including 12 rifles 129 assorted rounds of ammunition and 3 bullet proof vests were seized.
Joel Andem alleged gang leader of the ‘Gideon Warriors’ gang was today sentenced to 30 years. 10 years for illegal possession of firearm and 20 years for shooting with intent. The sentences are to run concurrently giving Andem a maximum of 20 years in prison.
The police have disclosed that six young men have mysteriously disappeared from the Greenwich Farm Area. Their disappearance coincides with the abduction of the three women who were taken from a bar at NewPort West gang raped and two murdered. Since then there have been no word on the men whereabout. So far the bodies of the dead women have not been found.

After almost two years of negotiations between the Government and the Police Federation a new wage package was today signed for the 7,000 rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. The signing took place at the Ministry of Finance. The agreement includes a one off payment of $50,000.00 Jamaican which will be paid next month.
Members of the Jamaica Gasoline Retailers Association (JGRA) and Esso were called to a meeting Wednesday night by the Labour Minister, Horace Dalley to try to find a solution to their ongoing dispute. After meeting for six hours the JGRA decided to shelf their plans for an all out shut down, Esso will suspend its present pricing mechanism while a Board of Inquiry investigates the situation. The islands tanker drivers who had withdrawn their services in solidarity with the JGRA have also returned to work.
The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) will be doing its own investigations into the pricing mechanism of all petroleum marketing companies operating in Jamaica to ensure that the pricing policies are fair to retailers.

The health authorities have cleared the drink, Advant Edge Carb Control, distributed by Food for the Poor as being responsible for the deaths of four persons in Gregory Park, St. Catherine. Executive Director of Food for the Poor Mr. Finzi-Smith says that they are still recalling the drink even though it has been cleared.
Fresh from their recent loss to Australia, Jamaica’s senior netballers, the Sunshine Girls will take on the reigning world champions New Zealand and Caribbean neighbors Barbados in a Tri-Nation series beginning Saturday November 12, 2005 at the National Indoor Sports Center. Jamaica will play Barbados in the first match following the opening ceremony on Saturday at 5:30pm. Sunday will see the Sunshine Girls against New Zealand at 4:30pm and Barbados will play New Zealand on Monday 5:30pm. The two top teams will meet on Tuesday 5:30pm for the finals.
A woman today disarmed a gunman who held her up and tried to rape her along the Great Pond Road. Reports are that the gunman robbed the woman of cash and a cell phone then tried to drag her into the bushes to rape her. She wrestled with him and took his gun. The gunman slashed her in the face with a knife and ran. A passerby took the woman to the hospital where she was treated and sent home. A 3.8 pistol which was taken from the gunman was handed over to the police.

The ground floor of Azan's Supercentre in Regal Plaza, Kingston was gutted by fire on Saturday night. So far details on the fire are not know however owner of the establishment, Milade Azan, says the building is insured
Early Saturday morning three men from one family were shot and killed near Highway 2000 in Sandy Bay District, Clarendon. Dead are Roy Thompson 50, his son Randy Thompson 19, and nephew Kevin Howard 21 - all of a Sandy Bay address. The police have linked the death of the three, ¬ to an illegal gun trade between Haiti and Jamaica.
