Rain, Rain and more rain has caused the cancellation of most outdoor activities planned to celebrate Heroes Weekend across Jamaica. However, Tempo’s combined Caribbean Rising II show braved the rains and gave patrons a treat at James Bond Beach, Oracabessa, St. Mary.

Monday October 17, 2005
*Jamaica’s National Heroes Days. and once again most outdoor activities cancelled as a result of the persistent rains from a system southwest of Montego Bay.

*The Jamaican Government honoured 157 persons for their contribution to the development of the country. The Awards Ceremony originally scheduled for the lawns at King’s House was moved indoors to the ballroom of the Governor General’s official residence.

*Heavy rains from category 1 hurricane Wilma cause flooding and much damage to property and roads across Jamaica. Over 300 persons in shelters. Schools closed.

*Gunmen kill two persons in separate incidents on Grants Pen Road within 24 hours.

Wednesday October 19, 2005
*Hurricane Wilma strengthens from a category 1 to a category 5 overnight. Pressure drops to 882mb making it the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic. More communities throughout Jamaica experience major flooding having to abandon their homes. Motorist throughout Jamaica experience major delays as they try to maneuver through flooded roads and landslides. Schools officially closed until Thursday.

*The Jamaican dollar drops beyond Jamaican $64.00 to USD $1.00.

*Sunshine at last as the rains associated with Hurricane Wilma moves away from Jamaica. Major clean up operation needed to get back to normal.

*Police in the Westmoreland shoots his girlfriend then commits suicide.
A seventeen year old girl found dead in bushes.

*A man believed to have died a few days earlier was found dead in his home.

*The European Union (EU) proposes a cut in sugar price by 37%.for Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP).

Friday-October 21, 2005
*Public schools remain closed one more day.

*Recommendations from the parliamentary rapourteur may persuade the European Union (EU) to reduce the percentage cut of sugar price from 37% to 25% says Glenys Kinnock, Member of the European Parliament (MEP).

*In the wake of flooding caused by Hurricane Wilma the Prime Minister, P. J. Patterson has vowed to take action for building code breaches.

*As the deportees continue to be sent back to Jamaica, over 40 convicts arrived in the island by chartered flight from the United States.

Saturday October 22, 2005
*With the rains gone the assessments have begun, and it’s not encouraging. Major work needed and the nation’s coffers are empty.

*Preliminary assessments by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) indicate that there was damage to sugar, coffee, vegetables and livestock.
